Medieval copper alloy book clasp of Howsam type A.9.2. Of characteristic late 14th- or early 15th-century design, with box-like construction and hole on the underside. The part that contained the strap is a rectangular hollow plate, with shaped end with a notch between two concavities, and pierced by twin rivet-holes, both with copper alloy rivet. The sides comprise separate strips. The face is inscribed with ihc (a variant of IHS, the first three letters of the name Jesus in Greek) reserved on a rectangular field of engraved oblique hatching. The front plate is then butted against a box-like diamond-set element cast in the form of a quatrefoil boss in high relief set on a lozengiform quatrefoil or diamond-shape. The lower faces of the latter lie between the ears of a stylised animal-head terminal cast in relief, with engraved detail and with a terminal loop projecting from its snout. The separate, soldered, back-plate is perforated by the rivet-holes and by a larger hole on the reverse of the diamond box.
